Colposcopy and Cervix Biopsy

Colposcopy is an exam that allows your ob/gyn to observe your cervix in close-up, by using a special magnifying microscope (colposcope). The cervix gets washed with a special liquid solution, in order to see the tissues and walls more clearly and reveal possible issues.

The exam takes place with the woman lying on the exam table, same as during a pelvic exam and a Pap test.

If deemed necessary, the doctor will take a small sample of tissue for a biopsy. Based on some characteristics that can be recognised on the cervical walls during the exam, lesions are detected and the doctor selects an area for sampling.
